On June 8, Apple held its annual Worldwide Developers Conference. Unlike previous WWDCs, this one did not discuss individual devices such as the iPhone and Apple Watch. In addition, the event lasted about 1 hour and 15 minutes rather than its usual 2 hours. Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, said, "Today we are looking forward to sharing some exciting announcements including our latest advancement in Apple Intelligence and Siri."
Not all devices will be able to use all the features in Siri AI. A complete list of supported devices and the features they support is available in this guide.
For this WWDC, Apple focused on three areas. As Craig Federighi, Apple's Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, explained, "This year we put our focus into three areas: First, improvements that make our platforms more responsive and easier to use in your day-to-day lives. Second, updates to trust and safety where we're building on our commitment to a safe and trusted platform for kids. Third, a big leap forward for Apple Intelligence, with a new architecture that unlocks a new Siri across all platforms along with many helpful features integrated into the apps you use every day." The changes apply to all Apple platforms. Federighi also added that the next Mac operating system will be called macOS Golden Gate.
New Features
Different features and upgrades were presented by Apple staff. System animations are faster, and photos will load faster into your library. iOS 27 will run on all devices that ran iOS 26. However, some older devices will not be able to run Siri AI.
The connection between cellular and Wi-Fi networks has been improved. Search functionality will receive significant updates in Spotlight, Mail, and Photos. Your device will automatically and quickly create a search index for fast access. This index will be more stable when new content is added.
Safety
Apple also devoted a significant portion of the keynote to child safety and parental controls.
Parents will have more control over what their child can access on their devices. Apple used current research as well as information from the American Academy of Pediatrics to help design appropriate guidelines.
When a child account is created, certain restrictions will automatically be enabled depending on the child's age. These restrictions will be set across the child's Apple devices. If a child does not already have a child account, their current account can be converted. A child account is activated via a setup assistant. Parents will have control over what the child is allowed to view. Every app in the App Store has an age rating. If the child wants to download a new app, they need permission. The same is true for visiting a new website. The account can also require approval to connect with someone new. If a child either tries to send or receives images that contain nudity, the content is blurred and a warning appears. In addition, gory or violent media is blocked.
Parents can see how much time their child spends on their device. Time Allowances let parents set limits for games, social media, and entertainment. Parents can schedule which apps are available at different times of the day.
Screen Time has been redesigned so parents can quickly see what their children are doing on their devices. Parental controls can be modified easily.
Apple Intelligence
Federighi explained, "This year we embarked on a deep collaboration with Google, leveraging the technologies behind their Gemini family of models. Together we created the next generation of Apple foundation models for our integrated Apple Intelligence experiences and adapted these new models to run on device and on servers using Private Cloud Compute. These powerful server and on-device models unlock a huge upgrade for Apple Intelligence with state-of-the-art understanding, reasoning, and multiple modalities."
Siri AI is a new version of Siri. This upgrade can understand personal context, perform app actions, provide on-screen awareness, understand images, and do much more. Siri is more conversational than before, so you can carry on an actual conversation. You can write and edit with Siri. Siri can use world knowledge to answer questions. Shortcuts can be created with just your voice.
Siri now has visual intelligence. For example, if you point your phone's camera at an object, Siri can identify it and provide relevant information. Writing tools are more powerful. Tell Siri what you need to write, and Siri will create a draft that you can easily edit. If you are sending a text or email to someone, Siri can write it in the writing style you already use with that recipient. Siri can give feedback on your writing. It can also proofread.
In Safari, related tabs can be placed automatically into a tab group. The new Notify Me feature will alert you when something you want becomes available, so you will not need to refresh a given page to check for new content or other changes. AI can quickly change your passwords, and you will be able to create extensions in Safari simply by telling Siri what you want.
