The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) is committed to promoting and advancing disability rights laws and programs that enable people who are blind, have low vision, or are DeafBlind to live fulfilling lives in their communities. AFB focuses on new opportunities in two primary areas of policy advocacy – transportation and technology – that have a transformative impact on employment, education, community living, and opportunities across the lifespan.

Supported by an active research agenda, AFB works independently and in coalition to identify and create opportunities for change that remove barriers and expand possibilities for people who are blind or have low vision. We also seek to defend and strengthen foundational disability rights laws and their implementation, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, and the Rehabilitation Act. Throughout the year, we may supplement our priority advocacy activities with support for other policies that align with our mission.

AFB advocates for technological innovation that is inclusive of blind and low vision people.

  • We will advocate for the Websites and Software Applications Accessibility Act and the Communications, Video, and Technology Accessibility Act – two pieces of legislation that expand access to websites, applications, and other digital technologies, so that people who are blind have more opportunities to work and live independently.
  • We will advocate for inclusive artificial intelligence that provides greater opportunities for people who are blind or have low vision while minimizing or eliminating discrimination, safety risks, and other harms toward people with disabilities.
  • We will advocate for implementation and enforcement of digital accessibility regulations under the Americans with Disabilities Act and Sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act.
  • We will oppose any legislation that would weaken ADA requirements for physical and digital accessibility.

AFB advocates for reliable, efficient, affordable, and accessible transportation options for people who are blind or have low vision throughout the country.

  • We will advocate for autonomous vehicle standards and testing that create a clear path to accessibility and safety for all people with disabilities.
  • We will support the rights of guide dog users to travel with the assistance of service animals.
  • We will advocate for policies and research that expand access to reliable, convenient, and affordable nondriver modes of travel within local cities and regions, so that people with disabilities can work, access rehabilitation and medical services, and live independently.
