Apple Updates: Hardware and Upcoming VoiceOver Enhancements
Janet Ingber
Apple recently expanded its product lineup with several new devices, including a lower-cost MacBook, an updated iPhone, refreshed iPad and MacBook Air models, and new external displays. Together, these releases represent one of Apple's broadest hardware refreshes in recent years, with a particular emphasis on providing more affordable entry points into the Apple ecosystem.
In addition to the newly released hardware, Apple has recently announced significant accessibility enhancements that are expected to arrive later this year. We'll take a look at both the new devices and some of the accessibility features that may be of particular interest to AccessWorld readers.
MacBook Neo
The MacBook Neo is the newest addition to Apple's laptop lineup and is positioned as a more affordable alternative to the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Starting at $599, it is Apple's least expensive MacBook to date.
The Neo is powered by the A18 Pro processor, the same chip used in the iPhone 16 Pro. It features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display, 8 GB of unified memory, and up to 16 hours of battery life.
The laptop includes two USB-C ports, a headphone jack, dual microphones, and two speakers supporting Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos. Weighing just 2.7 pounds, the Neo is designed to be highly portable while still providing enough performance for everyday tasks such as web browsing, productivity, media consumption, and Apple Intelligence features.
The base $599 configuration includes 256 GB of storage. A $699 model increases storage to 512 GB and adds Touch ID support. Available colors include Blush, Indigo, Silver, and Citrus.
MacBook Air
Apple also updated the MacBook Air with its new M5 processor. The refreshed Air maintains the same overall design while providing increased performance and improved efficiency.
The base configuration now includes 512 GB of storage, up to 18 hours of battery life, and support for Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos. The MacBook Air is available in Sky Blue, Midnight, Silver, and Starlight.
Pricing starts at $1,099 for the 13-inch model and $1,299 for the 15-inch version.
iPhone 17e
The iPhone 17e is Apple's newest entry-level smartphone and is intended for users who want a modern iPhone experience without the cost of a flagship model.
The device features a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display, MagSafe support, and battery life rated for up to 26 hours of video playback. The display uses Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says offers significantly improved durability and scratch resistance compared to previous generations.
Powered by the A19 processor, the iPhone 17e supports all Apple Intelligence features and delivers performance that should be more than sufficient for everyday use.
The phone includes a single 48-megapixel Fusion camera on the rear. While it lacks the ultra-wide and telephoto lenses found on more expensive iPhone models, it uses the same primary camera system found in the standard iPhone 17 lineup. The front-facing camera remains unchanged from the previous generation.
Physical controls include the Action button, volume controls, and Side button. Unlike other iPhone 17 models, the 17e does not include a dedicated Camera Control button.
The iPhone 17e fully supports Apple's Find My network and works with AirTags. However, because it does not include an Ultra Wideband (UWB) chip, Precision Finding is not available.
The phone is available in 256 GB and 512 GB configurations. Pricing starts at $599 for the 256 GB model and $799 for the 512 GB version. Color options include Black, White, and Soft Pink.
iPad Air
The updated iPad Air now features Apple's M4 processor while maintaining the same overall design introduced with the previous generation.
The device includes a 12-megapixel front-facing camera with Center Stage support, a 12-megapixel rear camera, Touch ID, a USB-C port, and full compatibility with Apple Intelligence. Support for Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos is also included.
The 11-inch iPad Air starts at $599, while the 13-inch model starts at $799. Available colors include Space Gray, Blue, Purple, and Starlight.
Additional Products
Apple also refreshed several of its higher-end products.
The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are available with either the M5 Pro or M5 Max processor. Pricing starts at $2,199 for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and $2,699 for the 16-inch model. Systems equipped with the M5 Max processor start at $3,599 for the 14-inch version and $3,899 for the 16-inch model.
Apple also introduced two new external displays. The Studio Display starts at $1,599, while the Studio Display XDR begins at $3,299.
Accessibility Updates
In addition to its hardware releases, Apple previewed a number of accessibility improvements that are expected to arrive later this year.
Of particular interest to VoiceOver users are significant enhancements to image recognition and scene description capabilities powered by Apple Intelligence. These features are designed to provide richer descriptions of both on-screen content and real-world environments, helping users better understand images, objects, and surroundings through spoken feedback.
