This program offers an authentic experience for students who successfully completed the Digital Accessibility Bootcamp and Work Study programs and are interested in pursuing careers centered on accessibility, providing them with an opportunity to integrate into our accessibility team and expand their portfolios with real-world projects, research, and publications on advanced accessibility topics.

What to Expect

AFB’s Digital Accessibility Residency provides students the opportunity to gain direct, hands-on experience as participants in our accessibility project team and to interact with potential employers. Participants are expected to engage fully in all aspects of the program, including independent and team-oriented projects, support for Bootcamp and Work Study participants, and meetings with program mentors and guest speakers.

Participants in the Digital Accessibility Residency program will be offered continued status as part-time AFB employees, which provides the following benefits:

  • Competitive Compensation: Receive an increased hourly compensation of $20 as you continue to develop your skills and contribute to meaningful projects.
  • Flexible Work Environment: Balance your studies by tailoring your schedule through remote work, allowing you to thrive with both your academic and career development pursuits.

Commitments:

  1. Dedicate approximately 20-25 hours per week during the Summer and 10-15 hours per week during the Fall and Spring academic semesters, if you continue participation.
  2. Access to a reliable internet connection and a computer for a seamless remote learning experience.
  3. Adherence to AFB’s employment policies and ethical standards.

Residency Selection Criteria

AFB’s Digital Accessibility Residency participants are selected through an application process. To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

  • Successfully complete all requirements within AFB’s Digital Accessibility Work Study
  • Be enrolled in college full time, or other higher education program
  • Be studying computer science, or a related field, with a minimum 3.0 GPA

Note: The Residency program is a highly competitive experience with limited seats available. Priority will be given to applicants residing in the following geographic areas: DC Metro (VA/MD/DC); WV area (WV/KY); NY Metro (NY/NJ); Pennsylvania; Florida.
