This week, the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations held a hearing to consider, yet again, the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Advocates will recall that the CRPD's ratification was defeated almost a year ago in the Senate thanks to fierce opposition from anti-UN, anti-internationalist lobbying interests. This latest attempt to obtain Senate ratification is believed to have a better chance, though opponents continue to make outrageous charges about what the CRPD will and will not mean for home schooling and the provision of abortion.
The United States International Council on Disabilities, the lead organization coordinating the national campaign for CRPD ratification, is urging the following:
